When Did The Wallabies Lose Men and Gain Popstars?

I’m constantly amazed at the power of social media and its new role in organisations. It can do wonders in terms of brand development, marketing reach, and connecting with an audience.

So I guess we shouldn’t be surprised when a few of our Wallabies jump on the Twitter bandwagon and start Tweeting about what they’re up to, where they are, and what’s happening around the camp.

Twitter has begun to play a huge role in sports. The NBA this year really got stuck into the social media and it brought a whole new level of interaction between fans and the stars they idolize.

I can see the reasoning behind some of the younger players getting in on the action, no doubt at the prodding of the ARU bosses or their own brand managers.

Now call me old school, but I can’t help but be a little worried about our team… the backs anyway. I notice it’s the entire backline on twitter… not one forward. Some would say forwards wouldn’t know how to tweet while others would say they’re more interested in winning ball to feed to the 'prima donnas' out wide.

I follow twitter and love it. Keeping fans in the loop is all well and good, but these guys are the Wallabies. Not Justin Bieber. And they’re about to run out against the All Blacks.

I can’t really imagine Ma’a Nonu sitting on the bus sending tweets out to his adoring fans on the way to training. Can you see Rene Ranger taking the boys out to shop for puppies and take happy snaps of each other to quickly throw online?

Don’t get me wrong, these kids are amazing players, and I’m not doubting their ability to outskill the Kiwis on Saturday. I love the kind of footy they play. Quade Cooper only kicked the ball once last weekend, and for a test fly half, that’s unheard of. It’s great, exciting rugby.

When I was playing footy, the backs would just stand out there and comb their hair. These days they don’t have time because they’re tweeting about their new peroxide job.

Are they gonna face up to the Haka on Saturday taking photos on their iPhones?

I’d just like to know if anyone else is worried that the men seem to be dying out of rugby, replaced by ridiculously talented popstars.

Disclosure; yes I do have a twitter account. I’m a journo so I reckon that’s my job. That’s my argument but let me know if you disagree.

Ok everyone. Let me clear the air. I was just having a joke here, taking the piss. Nothing negative. I'm a huge fan of the team and what they're doing.

I don't have a problem with them being on Twitter. It's great for them and their fans. I was just having a joke about the fact they're posting photos with puppies. In the week leading up to a Bledisloe. Please don't take it the wrong way.

I'm more worried that as a journo you think this is a newsworthy story? Surely there is something more pressing going on in the world that people should know about?

They are professional rugby players, most of whom are in their 20s, surely the use of twitter is to be expected of that age group (according to social norms). What makes their use of twitter any different to your use of twitter Kochie? Are you tweeting during a live telecast? I know they don't! Are you tweeting in your time off like they do? If so, what's the difference between your use of twitter & theirs?

Just FYI ther are plenty of forwards on twitter & plenty of Springboks and All Blacks. No need for team/position prejudice. Heck, even politicians have a twitter account while they're in/running for top job. Should we publicly lynch them for that? After all their job of running the country is slightly more significant & has greater repercussions than playing sport for Australia.

Forwards with Wallaby caps on Twitter:

James Horwill
Benn Robinson
Saia Faainga
David Pocock
Al Baxter

When you played rugby did you enjoy the friendly ribbing between team mates on the paddock? Cause that's what this seems to be. My only worry is if it eats into training, if they only do it in their downtime, no problems!

I think you're way off the mark, Kochie. I'm sure if you spent 5 mins at one of their training sessions on the park or in the gym, you'll realise there is no one more committed than these guys. It's not as though they are tweeting instead of training. I imagine being a Wallaby they work their butt of for a few hours a day, and then the rest of the day they are, as you say, out shopping, tweeting, or whatever. Give them a break. They are playing great rugby and shouldn't be ridiculed for having some fun with fans in their downtime.

I don't think its as clear cut as its made out - forwards or backs; glamourous or dull. I follow John Smith and Victor Matfield from the Springboks (both forwards for the uninitiated, neither very glam) on Twitter - and see how much good it has done them - NOT! As for Kochie - well where is the glamour in that!!!

I think they need to step up this weekend, bring back larkham and gregan. I disagree with you Koch regarding quade cooper only kicking the ball once in the whole game as being exciting RUGBY, I see this as high turn over rugby and thats why the Australian team will never be as good as 4 to 5 years ago.

hi Kochie,
I am a parent of a Wallaby Back and my son has no hair and he has a facebook page and so do i. I find it a great way of keeping in touch with him when he is o/s at a low cost. These wallabies do play with so much heart and sole its ashame that you all focus on the negatives in Aust sport. They work hard for the money that they earn and have very little time off so twitter and facebook are there outlets. thanks xoxo

You are spot on Kochie !!
Too much money and not enough committment. They do behave like popstars...and a lot will dissappear like popstars.
